Contract farmers raise 97% of the chicken consumed in the United States, but they face unfair challenges and hidden risks under the production contracts that are commonly offered by large corporate firms today. These contracts are showing up in other areas of agriculture, from livestock to seed production, and they're also beginning to catch on globally as multinational coporations expand into new and developing markets.
Â
This event will discuss the struggles of farmers in the absence of the final "Farmer Fair Practices" rules from the Grain Inspectors, Packer, and Stockyards Administration (GIPSA) of the USDA.  The Office of Management and Budget is currently reviewing these rules, which have been years in the making.
Â
Join Congresswoman Pingree as we hear from contract farmers and view a feature documentary film exploring the conditions these farmers face. Â
Farmers interviewed in the documentary will be in attendance.
